Have wanted to try Wise Sons ever since I moved away from the Bay Area, but I usually hit all my favorite spots before considering it. Well, I decided to make time for it this time around.
Ordered the Pastrami Reuben sandwich as that's what I had been wanting to try. Unfortunately, it was just ok. It was sufficient, but fairly unmemorable. Thin slices of pastrami and not particularly juicy.
Service was great though, can't complain about that.
Another person may find Wise Sons pretty good. But after all the pastrami I've tried, I have way higher standards these days. -
The best pastrami Reuben and rugelach I have ever had! The meat is tender and juicy, the bread is crusty and fresh and they are bound together by melted cheese and sauce. Add deli mustard to your liking and crunch on a dill in between. We went with a delicious latke side but you can also add a side salad. End with a sweet and delectable rugelach in your favorite flavor (chocolate, apricot or cinnamon).

I ordered the Corned beef Reuben (Again) real good sandwich with an extra whole pickle on the side. The Pastrami's real good but just a bit salty but most Pastrami is.
People here are just real nice. -
I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I didn't realize it's actually in the contemporary Jewish museum. If you enter inside, there is a security guard who will take your bag as you walk through one of their scanners.
I asked what they are most know for and they said their Reuben and Bagels. I decided to order their classic open faced smoked salmon bagel sandwich ($13.75) and a black cherry drink ($3.50).
Pros:
-I love the high ceilings and exposed brick
-covid polices are followed. There are signs that ask you not to move furniture since everything is physically distanced. No more than 4 people at a table.
-quick service!
Cons:
-n/a -
Reuben, sprinkle cookie delivered. Had a bit of nostalgia during this stay at home time, and when I saw Wise Sons I jumped on opportunity to order a Rueben. Overall its what you'd expect, but big delta here is that the toasted bread comes delivered as hard as a brick biscuit. Sprinkle cookie was solid as always, pre-wrapped as they are in the store.

Pastrami reuben was disgusting! The meat was so chewy. It was inedible. Should have looked at the reviews before going here. How are they charging $15 for this sandwich?!!

Over all I thought their food was delicious. I had the kimchi reuben and my wife had the chicken schnitzel. Generally, I'm a stickler for traditional flavors (as you'll see below), but I was really impressed with Wise Sons ability to do some crossover white retaining the Jewish deli nature of these dishes. Really well made, quality ingredients and delicious blends of flavors.
My greatest disappointment was that they do not have lox (at least at the 24th street deli). I know. I know. You're going to argue with me and tell me you got some there. No, you didn't. Stop arguing. You got smoked salmon. Same thing, you say? (Es felt im mebl in dakhkamer!!!) If I had a nickel for every time I explained this, I'd be a billionaire. Smoke salmon is, well, smoke cured. Lox is salt cured, never smoked. With that said, Wise Sons smoked salmon is, nevertheless, more delicious than what you get at the average grocery store. I bought some and was happy to eat it.
The bagels were good, on par with my San Francisco go to bagel shop, House of Bagels. Both Wise Sons and HoB obviously make their bagels by boiling. They're not those baked bread rings you find at that other big-chain bagel shop I refuse to mentioned lest I be required to go through some cleansing ritual afterwards. Oh, and by the way, their bialys are awesome.
Lastly, the prices at this deli are a bit high, even for San Francisco. Getting a faux lox on a bagel is like trying to rent a two-bedroom apartment! Once in a while won't break the bank, but I wouldn't be doing this a few times a week and still expect to retire to a condo in Ft. Lauderdale.
Over all, I recommend a visit. Try it out and your mouth will be happy. It's about as solid as a 3 can get. I'd give it 3.5 if I could. -

I didn't want to take BART to their flagship location on 24th so I walked to this one in the Jewish Museum. I had the pastrami sandwich on double-baked rye. It was not as huge as the ones in NYC (Katz's, 2nd Ave Deli, Pastrami Queen) but it was delicious and I paid at least half the NYC prices. Next time I'll try their reuben and/or go to their flagship deli.

Note: this review is only in reference to someone bringing me a reuben sandwich on a to-go order. Honestly, I think it was one of the best reuben sandwiches I've ever had. The meat was lean, juicy and flavorful and the bread was a delicious sourdough. Every bite was truly satisfying. It really hit the spot. I regret not getting to see the location, but definitely next time! I would absolutely come back to have another awesome Reuben! I wish I had more to say, but that about covers the situation.

Shucks! I was hankering for some matzo ball soup and a Reuben and have walked past this spot for years. The time finally arrived! I had little time but but the simple carryout window and friendly staff made placing the order easy peasy. The outdoor dining area here is super cute and lovely to pair with a visit to the Jewish Contemporary Museum.
Note that this is a pricy lunch spot- fair warning! However, they have all the goods- pastrami, rugalech, black and white cookies, Reubens, potato salad and on and on. I ordered the downtown lunch special with half matzo ball soup and a half Reuben. Unfortunately, the matzo ball seriously lacked flavor in the broth. It was so meh that I added a pack of their mustard to it hoping to add some pizzazz. The other bummer was my half Reuben ended up being just corned beef on bread and missing all of the other Reuben necessities (womp, womp). Rumor has it, their Reuben is Pretty dynamite. Because the customer service was sweet, I'll give this place another shot down the road. -

Since my previous review, Wise Sons went out of their way to apologize for the previous experience I had and I made my return today. And it says a lot that I just craved that Reuben soooo much that I was willing to make a return visit. But, as much as I had tried to find replacements, whether it was Saul's or Augie's over in Berkeley, or Morty's here in SF, I just could not find that luxurious, perfectly seasoned beef that made me become a Reuben sandwich fan at any of those places. Every Reuben at every sandwich shop that I've tried from here to Los Angeles didn't scratch that itch for (in my view) that perfect Reuben that I would get from Wise Sons.
Maybe its me being a west coast gentile that didn't grow up with Reuben sandwiches that has me unaware of what true quality Reuben sandwich tastes like...but, until I end up relocating to the East Coast or something, Wise Sons will continue to be my Reuben place because it is still just what I crave when I get itching for a Reuben. -
Lunch review. Jewish deli sandwich.
4 - Reuben (half pastrami, half corned beef, extra cheese, add crispy pastrami, no sauerkraut)
Overall, "I'm a fan." -

This place is insanely expensive, even by San Francisco standards. Their online menu must be old, as the prices were much higher when I got there. A pastrami reuben cost $18 after tax! And while it was not a bad sandwhich, is was not particularly big or piled high with meat as one would expect from such an expensive sandwhich. It's no NYC Katz Deli. At least if you pay $20 for a pastrami sandwhich there, it's so big you take half of it home.

When it comes to the classics, I'm a huge fan of keeping things traditional. When I ask for a martini, it must have gin (not vodka). I used to feel the same way about Reuben sandwiches - it must have corned beef. I've had the Reuben at Wise Sons with corned beef and it was delicious, but you must try it with their house made smoked pastrami. It's perfectly brined, perfectly smoked, tender, and juicy. If Heaven were a sandwich, it'd almost certainly be Wise Sons classic Reuben with smoked pastrami - it's that good!
Pro Tip: the location on Mission has indoor seating - enter the museum and immediately head to the right. -

Reuben sandwich and potato salad! Hot pastrami was tender, moist, and flavorful! Potato salad tasted amazing!
Cashier was nice to us to gift us a cinnamon bread. I'd pass on that next time. It was dry, but the sweet crumble topping was good.
The place has lots of large tables to dine in. Staff were nice and accommodating. I liked the inside decor of this restaurant. Overall, we were very happy with the quality of food and presentation! ^_^ -

Solid Jewish food! Great spot if you're craving your favorite Jewish dishes but a little too expensive for a regular lunch spot. Loved their Reuben sandwich their potato salad, and their mustard! Take your time reading the menu even if you have to step aside to let others through. Not a bad spot to hangout for a while if you've got some time. You can sit and inside if you go through a short security checkpoint or you can order from their window and sit outside.

I am a big fan of Wise Sons, and lunch there is usually a special treat. Don't let this review keep you away from them in general.
Today, however, it was raining lightly outside and the inside dining room is closed on Wednesdays (which my companion and I didn't know), so we took our sandwiches back to the office.
Imagine my surprise when my "corned beef" sandwich was pastrami, which I happen to also like, but which is not the same thing. And, if you are an aficionado of Jewish deli, you will imagine my distress at finding cheese (!) on my sandwich.
It wasn't a Reuben (thank goodness!). I was able to remove the cheese and enjoy the sandwich. But this absolutely wasn't up to Wise Sons' standards. Next time, I'll have to check before I leave the order counter. -
We always love going to Wise Sons in the Mission and were happy to get the chance to eat at the downtown location after a morning at the SF Moma.
There's outdoor seating (you order at a window from a limited take home menu). You can also go inside (through the quick museum security first) and eat your food inside or out.
The Contemporary Jewish Museum is beautiful, with plenty of lighting, extremely high ceilings, and geometric lines.
* Reuben w/ Pastrami ($15.50) - 4.5 stars
A go-to fave for my boyfriend. He gets this every time!
* Club Sandwich ($14) - 4 stars
A simple, fresh sandwich. I don't usually like cole slaw, but this was light and I enjoyed it. -

I had the reuben with pastrami. I passed on the potato salad and opted for extra pickles instead. The pastrami reuben was one of the best Reubens I've ever had. The rye bread was fresh, the sauerkraut was flavorful, the pastrami was crispy and a bit salty and a balanced amount of Russian dressing all came together for a tasty sandwich.
